It was a pretty quiet day, but people were in and out of the shop constantly. I have the hardest time remembering everyone's names, but I'm trying.
I brought my lunch with me, because these women are trying to make me broke from eating out so much! I was proud of my packed lunch, but a cute lunch box would have made it perfect. *currently searching etsy.com for an adorable lunch box* We also took a Starbucks break, and it turns out that one of the women working there also works at Starbucks. We bought $16 worth of drinks but with her discount only spent $5. It was amazing. I got a Mocha Coconut Frappe, and let me just say...one of the best decisions of the week.
It's really cool to hear about all of the Disney stories, like the other employees that fight over which characters they want to be, the fittings where people get really upset over not being chosen to play Olive Oil because they're too fat, or Marge Simpson because they're too short, and just the general workings of another costume place. I can't really call it a shop because they make the costumes off- sight. But they are responsible for maintaining the costumes, and minor alterations. It's really opening my eyes to the world of amusement parks and I'll have to revisit those ideas after I graduate. I've heard Halloween is an amazing time to be a part- time employee, if you can imagine. Not to mention the discounted Disney prices.
The only other African American lady working in the building was a woman named Mareeko but sadly, it was her last time. She was supposed to only stay for a year, but everyone in the building became like a big, multiracial family, and she decided to stay. She's moving to Atlanta to persue her own acting dreams, and they planned a surprise party for her. I was really moved by the sense of community, especially since she was the only Black woman. At 5:00pm everyone in the building--shop builders, costumers, admin staff, education staff-- came together in the conference room. There was a big scene that said "Good Luck Mareeko!" and bright pink cupcakes with adorable custom- made toppers made by someone on good ole etsy.com from cardstock and lollipop holders. I saved one because I thought they were just too cute (and I wanted to remember the name of the woman). Everyone gave her amazingly nice cards which she read aloud, and toasted to her future success with my favorritteee apple cider. Then everyone, including me, joined in for a group picture on the stairs. It was a really good time.
My birthday will fall on a Friday, right before Tech week starts. Tech week is the most stressful, and everyone says they're so excited to celebrate the end of rehearsals with a big party in honor of my birthday. Expect great stories about me popping bottles with my supervisors, haha.
Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming, and always invites me to wherever they're going. I feel like I picked the right place, and I would have no problem (as of now) making a long- term commitment to the theatre. They're like one big family, which is crucial when having to work long hours to make a production come together. Backstage work is equally, if not more important than on stage, and it's good to know that there's chemistry even between the different aspects of crew.
Day 3 was great!
