Day 10 was cool. I picked out gym outfits for the girls and guys. They're all wearing white American Apparel shirts with the blue hem around the sleeve and neck, along with blue soffee- like shorts. It took forever to match shirts and shorts, so I spent a lot of time doing that. The kids all knew their parts by then, and I overheard that some were considering dropping out. In fact, one girl decided to leave (even though the camp costs $500 and it will not be refunded) because she didn't get the part she wanted.
We had to go through the list of kids and make sure everyone had an outfit for every scene. A costume plot is the easiest way for everyone to remember when each kid is putting on and taking off garments. This is essential for quick changes and pre and post costume setting--setting out the pieces in their spot behind stage. We've filled up 4 long racks, and one of the racks has about 20 crinolines alone. All of the girls will have to wear a crinoline under their skirts unless one is built into the dress.
We got an order of wigs that had to be put on wig heads and brushed out. Unfortunately, some of the wigs looked like crap and will have to be sent back. I think the bill was somewhere around $500 for wigs! It looked really creepy with all of the styrofoam heads on tables and long flipped or beehive wigs. They were eventually put on black shelves which made them look even creepier. We also bought a bunch of bump- its to give some of the wigs some extra help that a whole can of hairspray can't provide. We spent a couple of hours combing through wigs and using Pink sheen spray to make the wigs presentable. I felt very nostalgic--and slightly nauseous--ruining the atmosphere with our own little cloud of aerosol. It smelled like a black hair salon, and every time I stepped out and returned to the shop I felt my lungs close up on me a little, bleh. I'm so glad my hair regimen is less deadly now.
Speaking of hair regimens...my hair- butter- making experiment was a somewhat success!
I mixed about 4oz of shea butter, a tablespoon of coconut oil, and a few drops of honey, tea tree oil, and sweet almond oil together over a stove until it was liquid then placed it in the fridge. When I took it out almost 20 minutes later it was the consistency of butter, and melted in my hands when I applied it to my hair, along with olive oil gel, to redo my flat twist- out. My hair's slightly drier than I'd like now, but I'm hoping it's because I overdid it with the gel. I'll have to use it on wet hair next time.
Anyway, they let me play my iPod in the shop today, which was cool/ awkward. I hate the question "what kind of music do you listen to?" because my music taste ranges from the NOISEttes, to John Legend, to Adele, to Erykah Badu, to P!nk, to Marsha Ambrosius, to Duffy...and I can go on... It's especially hard to pick something that everyone would find appealing when mostly country music is played in the shop (bleh) and I have none on my iPod. just not my thing. So I picked Maroon 5 just to be safe. That was great, and it started a whole conversation about The Voice and how good looking Adam Levine is. Maybe I'll slide in some rap next time...
I had to do a bunch of small things like going down into the underground stock to get womens' jackets and men's raincoats. The day was spent getting ready for the upcoming fittings. We'll get to see which things fit and which don't, which will determine what can still be purchased, and which things should just be made.
g'night!
