Technical difficulties are a bummer. My wifi isn't working so I'm writing this from my Blackberry. Disregard lower case letters that aren't automatically capitalized lol.
Day 2 was similar to day 1. There was more "busy work," but a lot more hands-on. From 10-12:40 I hand- sewed small red squares of bias tape into the inner linings of garments that had been used in previous productions. There's going to be hundreds of costumes in the shop starting next week, so we're preparing the shop this week for anticipated confusion. The red bias tape will distinguish which pieces aren't from the shop, and green tape for the shop. Hand- sewing is tedious but more reliable than pinning the bias tape in, so it took forever.
Apparently there was a mix-up in the shop over performance tickets, so the woman superevising me and another lady in the shop went out to lunch with a very apologetic man from the education department. He was...flamboyant to say the least. We went to a bar called Jax and I was planning on paying my bill, but I'm also trying to save money, so I ordered what I thought would be a measly BLT. Turns out they have pretty impressive BLT's, so I didn't feel so cheap. In the end, I should have known the guy would foot the bill, because he took everyone else out to lunch, but I had to be prepared. I expect few perks for the intern, haha.
After lunch I finished hand- sewing and began labeling dresses with waist, chest, and skirt length measurements to help categorize them.I wasn't used to skirt length measurements-- I usually stick with chest, waist, sleeve length and sometimes inseam, but every shop does things slightly different. I'll have to finish measuring a whole bunch of garments tomorrow.
It's so interesting to hear stories from some of the women's other jobs. Many work at Disney or Universal, and it seems fairly easy to get a job there if you know the right people. I've already been offered tickets, and at $80 a piece, I'll have to take them up on their offer.
The other big thing going on at the office is a local trial taking place because of the death of a young girl. The mother is accused of possibly killing her, and the trial is on every major local station. Every where we go, I see or hear someone talking about the case. Despite the terrible circumstances, it's interesting to hear so many people concerned with things happening in the news. Or maybe it's not interesting...I just need to find more friends who read.
Tomorrow may be very similar to today, but I'm learning more about the shop, and equally important, the other jobs and opportunities the women have as costume designers and creators in other shops.
That's all for Day 2!
